JICA PRECIDA – UOJ has conducted 5S training for the academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Agriculture on 8th & 9th of June 2023 at the Research and Training Building of the Faculty of Agriculture in Ariviyal Nagar, Kilinochchi. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the Faculty of Agriculture acted as the counterpart in planning and organizing this training program, following a need assessment with the help of Project Experts.
Resource Persons from TOYOTA Lanka namely, Mr. Nihal Palliyaguruge, Mr. Gayan Perera, Mr. Malinka Gunasekara and Mr. Ruchaka Gun Hewage conducted the training. The objectives of training were 1) To maintain clean laboratory/office spaces and encourage effective laboratory/office management to achieve Education and Research goals set by the faculty; 2) To meet equipment and workspace management level to the standard (e.g., cleaning after use, record keeping etc.) and 3) To build and enhance the skill of 5S for the Staff at the Faculty, Departments and Laboratories.
TOYOTA Lanka resource persons shared TOTOTA Lanka’s 5S history, their experience in their workplace and how they follow 5S in righteous manner to sustain the performance of their company. They conducted 5S concept / theory lectures, group activities and Gemba (Site visit in Japanese) visit to the laboratory in each department. At Gemba visit, they provided valuable suggestions to follow 5S at the working place. Altogether 28 academic staff members (including temporary staff members) and 29 non-academic staff participated in this training. Participants actively contributed to all the activities and made accomplishments. As a first step of improvement, an action plan was prepared and presented by each department to implement the 5S system in the faculty and will be reviewed by the resource persons from TOYOTA Lanka after a few months. Heads of the departments will oversee the implementation of action plan and report the progress to the coordinator/ IQAC to sustain the best practices at the Faculty of Agriculture. The same training for the rest of the staff will also be planned at the end of the year.
