Outreach Committee (OC) of the Faculty of Agriculture in collaboration with the Agriculture Sector Skills Council (ASSC) (Ministry of Education) and its implementing partner DevoPro Guarantee Limited has organized a “Awareness Workshop on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in Sri Lanka” and it was held at Faculty auditorium , Faulty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna, Ariviyal Nagar, killinochchi on on 24.01.2024 (Wednesday)
Inaugural session
This program was commenced with registration of participants from 08.30 am–09.00 am Once the registration of participants, mostly the students from 3rd year and some final year students and the staff members of Faculty the participants were welcomed by Chairperson Outreach committee Prof. K. Pakeerathan followed by a valuable introductory remark was delivered by Prof. S. Vasantharuba Dean faculty of Agriculture. He has emphasized the importance of good agricultural practices and how the student’s participation will help in proceeding these practices in future in Sri Lanka. The sponsors were Agriculture Service Skill Councill (ASSC). M. S. Karunarathna, Project Director/ ASSC gave a talk on the activities of his organization. A Special talk was also delivered by Prof. USAMI KOICHI, JICA expert, PRECIDA, UOJ. He has expressed his willingness to hold these kinds of workshops in future too once these will help to enrich the outreach activities of the faculty of agriculture in future. With his talk the inaugural session was come to an end followed by morning tea.
Technical session
The technical session was commenced by 9.30 Dr. S.J. Arasakesary, Member, OC delivered a lecture on “Need and the Necessity of the GAP in Sri Lanka”. He has expressed that the new emerging trend has made it necessary to practice good agricultural practices in order to have better export market for agricultural products. After a short break the second session on technical matter was taken by Mr. M.S. Rinoos, Principal, School of Agriculture, Vavuniya who is also responsible for GAP activities in Northern Srilanka on the Present Status and Future Prospects of GAP in Sri Lanka. As GAP certification is ia vital activity the next session was taken on the Registration Procedure for GAP Certificate and the Standards by Mrs. Jegatheeswary, DPDA, Kilinochchi this lecture was followed by the lunch
The afternoon session was taken by Seed Certification by Mr S. Selvakumar, AD, Seed Certification for Service Regional Office, Paranthan. The final technical session was taken up by Session V: National Crop Management Plan Mr. Kasun Senadilankara, ASSC.
In final wrap up session the certificates were issued to to the participants by signatories Th seminar was successfully completed by 4.15 pm on the same day with vote of thanks by Professor.K. Pahherathan as coordinator Outreach committee.
