The proposed biogas system for the University of Jaffna was commissioned on 15th March 2023 in the livestock farm unit of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kilinochchi Premises, University of Jaffna. Deans and staff of the Faculties of Agriculture, and Engineering; Works engineer/ Kilinochchi premises and his staff; UNDP officials and officials from the biogas digester construction company participated in this ceremony. The construction work of the UNDP funded biogas system commenced on 1st of December 2022 under the renewable energy project. The capacity of the biogas digester is 35 cubic meters and it can produce 14 cubic meters of biogas at its full capacity. The emitted biogas is collected in a storage tank and it can be connected to a generator to produce electricity and also can be connected to a gas cooker for heating purpose. The digested waste material collected after the biogas generation can be used as enriched organic fertilizer for crops. This system can also be used as a demonstration plot and experimental trial unit for students.
