In 2016, Government of Sri Lanka and Government of Japan entered into Grant Agreement to implement “The Project for the Establishment of Research and Training Complex at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna”. The project included the construction of a laboratory building and a training building, the development of university farm, and the preparing experimental manuals as a soft component. The project was completed in 2021.
In 2021, the Government of Sri Lanka requested to the Government of Japan for a new technical cooperation project to strengthen the university’s education and research infrastructure and university management, while continuing to utilize the facilities and equipment provided in the grant project. This technical cooperation project is expected to enhance the quality of education and research at the Faculty of Agriculture and to contribute to the human resource development that will help improve the productivity of agriculture and the livestock industry in the Northern Province and strengthen their ability to adapt to climate change.
This Technical Cooperation Project started in June 2022, as “the Project for Research and Education Capacity Improvement of Dry Zone Agriculture at University of Jaffna (PRECIDA-UOJ)”. This project aims at enhancing education, research, and outreach /social engagement and strengthening the Faculty management. This project duration is 5 years which constitutes 2 phases namely planning phase and implementation phase.
- Planning Phase (0.5 years- June 2022 – December 2022) setting up an implementation structure and conduct a baseline survey to fix a detailed action plan.
- Implementation Phase (4.5 years- January 2023- June 2027) conducting in the areas of education, research, outreach/social engagement, and management.
The first Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting of this project was held on 31st January 2023 at the main board room of the University Grant commission under the chairmanship of secretary ministry of Education. Vice Chancellor, Dean/Agriculture, Dean/Technology and Professor in Agronomy from the university of Jaffna, members from JICA PRECIDA-UOJ, representatives of JICA Sri Lanka office and Embassy of Japan, representatives from university grants commission, representatives from ministry of Agriculture and ministry of Animal Production and Health were participated in this meeting.
